Stimulation of brain waves using a singing bowl brings focus to stress relief. You may find that using singing bowls will help calm thoughts, relieve tension, and help you become more conscious of your breathing. This consciousness may promote a sense of inner calm and relaxation. After a hearty welcome, Yogi Steven's sessions are wordless.

Historically Speaking: Why Didn't People Smile in Old Photos, or Did They?: Live Zoom Program
Presented by Archivist, Photographer, and Educator Gary Saretzky
Back in the early days of photography in the 1840s, photographers said, “Say Prunes” instead of “Say Cheese” to get a facial expression considered appropriate for a portrait. Most sitters continued to display serious faces until the 20th century. Yet a small percentage of extant 19th century portraits show people smiling. Illustrated with numerous examples, including some celebrity portraits, this lecture explores the smiling/not smiling continuum in 19th century photographic portraiture.
Co-sponsored by the Monmouth County Historical Association.
Check out some of Saretzky's work in our New Jersey reference collection here.
This session will be conducted on Zoom and is free of charge. Registration and internet access are required to attend. Register below to receive emailed information on how to access the conversation. Zoom access link will be emailed the afternoon before the presentation.

Writers Workshop -- In Person at the Eastern Branch
Looking for a supportive environment to practice and explore your writing style? Facilitator Molly Fox provides a choice of prompts for a 20-30 minute quick write. Excerpts of published works, both old and new, are shared to serve as models of strong writing and to inspire participants to craft their own style. Writers are invited (but no pressure!) to share their resulting work and offer gentle suggestions and feedback to their fellow writers. All are welcome!
Molly Fox, MS Ed, is a Reading Specialist, writing instructor, and certified yoga teacher. She has facilitated writing groups at Brookdale Community College and has participated in writing workshops at local libraries and educational events. She is looking forward to being part of a supportive community of writers.
Meetings take place on the second Friday of the month.
Are you a budding or experienced author? Have up to 1,500 words of your work read aloud for first-impression feedback and critique by other writers.
Call the library or complete the registration form below.
The first five registrants will have their work critiqued. No cost and nothing to bring, but a positive attitude -- and copies of your work.
This get-together will be held the second Saturday of every month.
This program is co-sponsored by the Howell Township branch of the Monmouth County Library and NJWritingGroups.com
*This session of the Silent Writing Club will take place on the second Saturday of October instead of our usual third Saturday. Third Saturdays of the month will resume in November.*
Inspired by the popularity of the Silent Reading Club craze, Hazlet Library welcomes you to the Silent Writing Club. Come gather with like-minded writers so you can finally get some progress on your new novel, screenplay, or poetry. Prompts will be provided for fun, but you can work on anything that makes your writing heart soar! Give yourself some accountability and get your "butt in the chair."
Please bring your laptop, tablet, journals, and writing implements of choice!
All Monmouth County Libraries are closed today, however, our website is open 24/7 to read, renew, request, and research.
Patrons are welcome to access the Library’s online resources, databases, eBooks, eMagazines, video and audio streams and digital classes, available continuously on MonmouthCountyLib.org

Maybe You Should Talk to Someone: Examining the Truths and Fictions We Tell Ourselves with Lori Gottlieb
Every year, nearly 30 million Americans sit on a therapist’s couch—and some of these patients are therapists themselves. In her remarkable book Maybe You Should Talk to Someone: A Therpaist, Her Therapist, and Our Lives Revealed, Lori Gottlieb tells us that despite her license and rigorous training, her most significant credential is that she’s a card-carrying member of the human race.
We invite you to join us as Gottlieb chats about exploring the inner chambers of her patients’ lives—a self-absorbed Hollywood producer, a young newlywed diagnosed with a terminal illness, a senior citizen threatening to end her life on her birthday if nothing gets better, and a twenty-something who can’t stop hooking up with the wrong guys (even one from the waiting room)—she finds that the questions they are struggling with are the very ones she is now bringing to her own appointments.
With startling wisdom and humor, Gottlieb reveals our blind spots, examining the truths and fictions we tell ourselves and others as we teeter on the tightrope between love and desire, meaning and mortality, guilt and redemption, terror and courage, hope and change.
Maybe You Should Talk to Someone is revolutionary in its candor, offering a deeply personal yet universal tour of our hearts and minds and providing the rarest of gifts: a boldly revealing portrait of what it means to be human, and a disarmingly funny and illuminating account of our own mysterious lives and our power to transform them.

Psychological Thrillers and the Queen of Twists– Rebroadcast of Author Talk with Freida McFadden
Please use this link to watch this rebroadcast here. No registration needed.
Get your popcorn and take a seat for a conversation with the queen of twists herself, Freida McFadden! McFadden will tell all on writing psychological thrillers, her mega-bestselling hit The Housemaid series, and, in particular, her forthcoming third installment, The Housemaid Is Watching.
The next book in the series is full of unbelievable twists and tension as it continues to follow Millie Calloway. She used to clean other people’s houses—now, she can’t believe this new home is actually hers. The charming kitchen, the quiet cul-de-sac, the huge yard where her kids can play. She and her husband saved for years to give their children the life they deserve.
Even though Millie is wary of their new neighbor, Mrs. Lowell, when the family is invited over for dinner, they accept the invitation in the hopes of making friends. Mrs. Lowell’s maid opens the door wearing a white apron, her hair in a tight bun. Millie knows exactly what it’s like to be in her shoes. But the maid’s cold stare gives her chills…
The Lowells’ maid isn’t the only strange thing on their street. Millie’s sure she sees a shadowy figure watching them. Her husband leaves the house late at night. And when she meets a woman who lives across the way, her words chill to the bone: Be careful of your neighbors.
Millie wonders: Did they make a terrible mistake moving their family here?
About the Author: #1 New York Times, Amazon Charts, USA Today, Wall Street Journal, Sunday Times, and Publisher's Weekly bestselling author Freida McFadden is a practicing physician specializing in brain injury who has penned multiple bestselling psychological thrillers and medical humor novels. Freida’s work has been selected as one of Amazon Editors’ best books of the year, she is the winner of the International Thriller Writers Award for best paperback, and she is a Goodreads Choice Award winner. Her novels have been translated into over 30 languages.
Freida lives with her family and black cat in a centuries-old three-story home overlooking the ocean, with staircases that creak and moan with each step, where nobody could hear you if you scream. Unless you scream really loudly, maybe.
