Grab your Bibliobox: Graphic Novel Style!

Each month, register for your Bibliobox, read the graphic novel and come chat about it in the Teen Department.  Participants can have a snack, talk about the book and make a related craft. Biblioboxes contain small toys, bookmarks, a treat, and a copy of the book for you to keep. Biblioboxes and discussions are best suited for readers entering grade 6 through grade 8.

PICK UP YOUR BIBLIOBOX AFTER YOU REGISTER!  BOXES ARE AVAILABLE 3 WEEKS BEFORE THE MEETING DATE!

This month's graphic novel is NEW KID by Jerry Craft

New Kid is a timely, honest graphic novel about starting over at a new school where diversity is low and the struggle to fit in is real, from award-winning author-illustrator Jerry Craft.

Seventh grader Jordan Banks loves nothing more than drawing cartoons about his life. But instead of sending him to the art school of his dreams, his parents enroll him in a prestigious private school known for its academics, where Jordan is one of the few kids of color in his entire grade.

As he makes the daily trip from his Washington Heights apartment to the upscale Riverdale Academy Day School, Jordan soon finds himself torn between two worlds—and not really fitting into either one. Can Jordan learn to navigate his new school culture while keeping his neighborhood friends and staying true to himself?

Zero-Waste Talk with Jussara Lee

Find out more about living a Zero-Waste life with plastic-free activist Jussara Lee.

Microplastics are found throughout the entire human body: there will be more plastic in the oceans than fish before 2050, less than 6% of plastics are recycled, over 10,000 chemicals are used to produce plastic products, including carcinogens, neurotoxins, endocrine disrupters, some causing infertility and obesity.

If you are new to living plastic-free or zero waste, just looking at the journey ahead of us can seem a little… daunting. On one hand, we’re eager to make changes, and excited to have a positive impact on ourselves and the planet. But what first steps to take?

Jussara Lee is a native Brazilian of Korean heritage and a passionate plastic-free, zero-waste fashion designer.

This month's graphic novel is FREESTYLE by Gale Galligan

From New York Times bestselling author Gale Galligan, a fun, high-energy graphic novel about friendship, family, and the last hurrahs of middle school.

Cory's dance crew is getting ready for a major competition. It's the last one before they graduate eighth grade and go their separate ways to high schools all over New York City, so they have to make it count! The group starts to have problems as their crew captain gets increasingly intense about nailing the routine, and things go from bad to worse when Cory's parents ground him for not taking his grades seriously. He gets stuck with a new tutor, Sunna, who he dismisses as a boring nerd… until he catches her secretly practicing cool yo-yo tricks. Cory wants to learn the art of yo-yo, and as his friendship with Sunna grows, he ends up missing practice and bailing on his crew -- and they are not happy about it. With mounting pressure coming from all sides, how is Cory supposed to balance the expectations of his parents, school, dance, and his new friend?

Radical Connecticut People's History In The Constitution State Book Talk

Who really makes history? Join authors Andy Piascik and Steve Thornton as they talk about Radical Connecticut: People’s History in the Constitution State.  Learn about the stories of everyday people and well-known figures whose work has often been obscured, denigrated, or dismissed. They'll share narratives of movements, strikes, popular organizations and people in Connecticut who changed the state and the country for the better.
Unlike a traditional history that focuses on the actions of politicians, generals, and business moguls,
Radical Connecticut is about workers, the poor, people of color, women, artists and others who engaged in the never-ending struggle for justice and freedom.

Bridgeport native Andy Piascik is an award-winning author who writes for many publications and websites. He is the author of three books the most recent of which, the novel In Motion, was published earlier this year by Sunshine Publishing. He can be reached at andypiascik@yahoo.com.

Steve Thornton retired in 2013 as a union organizer in Connecticut. He has been a labor educator, tenant organizer, and anti-racist activist. He has helped build coalitions for economic and social justice across the country, in Europe and the West Indies. Steve conducts walking tours and has spoken at picket lines, breweries, universities, town halls, and with people living on the streets. He is the author of four books and writes for the Shoeleather History Project.com which promotes “history from below.”

Myths are the main drivers of America’s culture wars - pitting us against each other, shaping our identity and bringing us to the brink of an existential crisis.

Richard Slotkin, widely regarded as one of the preeminent cultural critics of our time, engages in an important Conversations discussion with Dr. Daniel Barrett focusing on some foundational myths that have shaped American identity. Slotkin and Barrett will discuss how contemporary politics are heavily influenced by these myths, on both sides of the political aisle.

He is the Olin Professor of English and American Studies at Wesleyan University.

Dr. Daniel W. Barrett is a Professor in the Department of Psychology at Western Connecticut State University.  A former resident of Redding, he graduated with a BA from Wesleyan University, earned his Ph.D. in Social Psychology from Arizona State University and served as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Health Communication at the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania.

This month's novel is A ROVER'S STORY by Jasmine Warga

#1 New York Times bestseller * Best Book of the Year from The Washington Post, Publishers Weekly, New York Public Library, Chicago Public Library

Res was built to explore Mars. He was not built to have human emotions. But as he learns new things from the NASA scientists who assemble him, he begins to develop humanlike feelings. Maybe there’s a problem with his programming….

Human emotions or not, launch day comes, and Res blasts off to Mars, accompanied by a friendly drone helicopter named Fly. But Res quickly discovers that Mars is a dangerous place filled with dust storms and giant cliffs. As he navigates Mars’s difficult landscape, Res is tested in ways that go beyond space exploration.

As millions of people back on Earth follow his progress, will Res have the determination, courage, and resilience to succeed…and survive?

Meet Your Community: Woodbury's Community Emergency Response Team

Have you wondered about the may different organizations that serve Woodbury and surrounding areas and what they do?  Do you want to know more about their missions, accomplishments and how you can join them?

Twice a month, the WPL will highlight a local organization; it's a chance for you to find out more, ask questions, and share experiences!

TONIGHT'S ORGANIZATION: WOODBURY'S COMMUNITY EMERGENCY RESPONSE TEAM

The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help. CERT members also are encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in their community.
